I've been in a fannish malaise lately. I haven't been doing a lot of reading or writing or commenting *sorry about that*, but I did sign up for

yuletide this year. I was lucky to get assigned The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, a book I found so charming.

This is a short little gen fic centered on a snowy winter's night when Bod was about 10 years old. Written for

I also have to thank my son who gave me the original idea for this story. One day after school he was telling me about a book he had heard at school about a boy who could have anything he wished for. It immediately started the wheels turning, and I wondered what would happen if someone like Draco, a boy who has almost everything, would be given the chance to wish for anything in the world. Of course, he would wish for more toys, but we know his story takes a darker turn as he grows older. What would he wish for then?

The sand sifts between my toes, fine like sugar and hot from the sun. I pull his hand as we climb the dune. "Higher," I say, and he swears at me, calling me "git," "bastard" and " slave-driving Gryffindor freak."

I promise him paradise, and all he does is complain, but Malfoy always complains. And that’s when I pull him close and kiss him until I can no longer breathe.

Gulls cries overhead and in the distance, beyond the dunes, waves crash. But here… Sunburned noses and sandy toes. Kisses and softly muttered oaths… This is paradise.

This is bliss.
